Summary
High HFRS activity in the Republic of Bashkortostan, the historical epicenter of Puumala virus (PUUV) HFRS in the Russian Federation. Annual case loads in the Ural-Volga region routinely exceed several thousand and are driven by bank vole (Myodes glareolus) populations in mixed-broadleaf forests. National surveillance is run by Rospotrebnadzor.
Why this matters
Bashkortostan and surrounding Ural-Volga regions consistently account for the majority of European Russia's PUUV HFRS burden — among the highest national HFRS rates in Europe.
