Summary
Annual autumn–spring HFRS season in Shaanxi province, the historical epicenter of Hantaan virus (HTNV) in China. Cases are tracked by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention notifiable-disease system; the principal reservoir is the striped field mouse (Apodemus agrarius). Across the 10-year window 2014–2023, Shaanxi reported 16,164 HFRS cases (China CDC Weekly 2025) — the most of any Chinese province — with national HFRS incidence falling from 1.01/100,000 in 2014 to below 0.4/100,000 by 2023. Year-specific 2023 totals for Shaanxi alone are not extractable from open-access tier-1 sources, so values here are intentionally left at zero rather than estimated; for reference, Shaanxi recorded 2,657 cases and 14 deaths during 1 January – 19 December 2021.
Why this matters
Shaanxi consistently reports the largest fraction of national HFRS cases in China and is a continuing focus for vaccine campaigns and rodent surveillance. National incidence has trended downward through the 2014–2023 decade, attributed to vaccination, rodent control, and improved housing.
