Summary
Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome season in Argentina that began in epidemiological week 27 of 2025 and continues into 2026, with 101 confirmed cases reported through epidemiological week 16 of 2026 (42 of those cases reported in 2026). Unusually for Argentine ANDV epidemiology, the largest share of cases has been recorded outside Patagonia: Buenos Aires Province leads absolute counts (about 42 confirmed cases), while the NOA region (notably Salta and Jujuy provinces) records the highest incidence rate. Reservoirs include Oligoryzomys spp. and other sigmodontine rodents. A specific season-wide Argentina death count is not extractable from the open-access Argentine Ministry of Health bulletin available at access time, so the death value here is intentionally left at zero rather than estimated; ANDV typically carries a 25–40% case-fatality ratio.
Why this matters
Notable geographic shift of Argentine ANDV epidemiology toward central and northern provinces (Buenos Aires Province and NOA), unusual for a virus historically concentrated in Patagonia. This season is the epidemiological backdrop for the April 2026 MV Hondius cruise-ship hantavirus event.
