Summary
Two British nationals confirmed positive for Andes hantavirus in connection with the MV Hondius cruise-ship cluster. UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reported the confirmations on 8 May 2026. UKHSA also flagged one additional suspected case on Tristan da Cunha and is providing advice to two further British passengers who returned to the UK independently and are self-isolating without symptoms. UKHSA assesses the risk to the general UK public as very low. Three British nationals remain among the broader MV Hondius case count tracked separately under the multi-country WHO DON 599 record.
Why this matters
First confirmed UK Andes virus cases since the inception of UKHSA hantavirus surveillance. Hantavirus is not endemic in the UK; these are imported via the MV Hondius investigation.
